Big Smoke Factory – Big Smoke Writing Factory is a creative writing school run by writers, for writers. They believe in quality teaching and workshop facilitation, and collaborate on developing resources for ‘general’ classes, like  Beginning to Write classes, while bringing particular expertise in a wide variety of fields to students through more specialist courses. 

West Lothian Writers – West Lothian Writers is an independent community group with a large membership. They normally meet every two weeks to offer advice to one another. They invite authors to give workshops and have organised Writing Retreats and member anthologies.

Almond Press Almond Press is an independent publisher of dystopian and apocalyptic fiction, based in Scotland. They run short story competitions, and offer various prizes, promotion, and publication to writers.

Seren Books Seren is Wales’ leading independent literary publisher, specialising in English-language writing from Wales. Many of our books are shortlisted for – and win – major literary prizes across the UK and America.

The Bristol Prize an annual international writing competition, with a cash prize, open to published and unpublished writers. They publish an annual anthology of the winning stories.

Black Heart Magazine Black Heart Magazine is an independent online literary magazine, transmitting tenacious text around the world at the speed of wifi. Since 2004, their site has been combating clichés and skipping straight to supercharged stories. They heart art.

Writers Reign –  a useful website for writers, with dozens of articles and heaps of information about the craft of writing, with links to further resources.

ShortStops a delightful website with guest bloggers and listings on all things short story related. If you’re into short stories, it’s well worth a look.

Platform For Prose – Platform for Prose is an online showcase featuring contemporary short stories, flash fiction and poetry from emerging and more established writers.
